The Sequel Nobody Asked For
Page to Stage began in 2019 as a single pilot documentary shot and edited by Matt Salacuse, displaying Mark’s joke writing process and trial-and-error in testing new jokes live in clubs. The pilot developed into a full first episode release 5 years after the pilot, in 2024.
Now 2026, Page to Stage 2 returns to continue documenting Mark's joke writing process, this time with an additional focus: writing a clean joke.
To Be (Clean), or Not To Be (Clean)
The premise of Page to Stage 2 is rooted in Mark's preparation for the Stand Up for Heroes comedy show at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on November 11th, 2024, which honored veterans and their families with performances, and headline comedic acts from notoriously clean comedians Jim Gaffigan and Jerry Seinfeld.
The documentary follows the development of Mark’s two clean joke candidates, referred to as "algo" and "zoo", each competing to be told on stage at Mark's performance at the Lincoln.
It's All Pipes, Jerry!
Any casual Tuesdays with Stories!, We Might Be Drunk, or general Mark Normand fan has long heard Mark’s admiration for Seinfeld, both the show and the comedian, through Mark's many references and stories. Not only was a clean joke important for Mark’s performance in the presence of donors (they don't laugh) and veterans, Mark wanted to impress his Jerry by matching his clean style of comedy.
As Mark is widely known for his quick, yet "dirty" or "inappropriate" punchlines, this episode explores Mark's trials and errors in honing his clean joke telling skills live in various NYC comedy clubs, for one of the most important performances of his career.
Inside Baseball
The single-camera documentary production features numerous "inside baseball" insights about stand up comedy, and comics’ processes in crafting well-received jokes for a specified audience.
Mark provides plentiful commentary on anticipated reactions to his jokes before the shows, live reactions from the audience during the show, and post-show reflections with planned next-show adjustments, in mini interviews led by Matt Salacuse.
In addition to his own reflections on the success or failure of each joke, Mark spitballs clean bits and ideas in comedy club greenrooms with other performing comics.
A Comedy Who's Who
The episode features excerpts and appearances from many prominent comedians in the NYC stand up scene, including Joe List (co-host of Tuesdays with Stories with Mark), Sam Morril, Bobby Kelly, Ian Fidance, Jon Stewart, Matt Ruby, Sean Millea, Maddie Wiener, Chris Millhouse, and of course, Jerry Seinfeld.
The series was co-created, filmed, and edited by photographer and producer Matt Salacuse, a close friend of Mark’s, and producer on Mark’s podcast We might be drunk. Salacuse also interviews Mark and assists him in creating his final clean joke.
Episode 2 features Mark performing at high-profile New York City comedy clubs such as the Comedy Cellar, Stand Comedy Club and Restaurant, and City Winery, before the final showing of his clean joke at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
